With his first album "Pastoral Song", Jan wanted to share Xinjiang Altai folk music with people, expressing his love for his homeland.
In this second album "City", he decided to focus a little more on himself, on his changing life, and went to explore more deeply his musical possibilities. He's a bit like a traveler who lost his bag, but whose journey is still going on...
Mutations on the way are inevitable. Therefore, Jan is no longer obsessed with whether his work must have an "unified style" that was originally imagined or obvious. He decided to explore new ways of playing his own music, to deconstruct the full harmony of roots music. It may not be a complete work, but a part of a life trip, a step to go through different times and spaces.
Things are not black and white,
Truth is in old memories but also in new landscapes,
Cities didn't come out of thin air,
Their foundations migrated , the ancestors remain,
An historic change after settlement
A part of their people stayed, another part left
Some are still in memories, anchored here, some has been forgotten and no one mentioned
So are we
Jan is a folk musician from Xinjiang (China), and more precisely from Altai mountains. He plays dombra (Kazakh luth), Tsuur
(flute), jew's harp and igil (Tuvan horsehead 2 strings viiolin). Very inspired of Altai nomadic horse people's folk music, Jan likes to share traditionnal tunes, but also creates a very personnal music, a bridge from grasslands to Chinese modern cities....more
